FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

1. How Many Gods Does Hinduism Believe In?

Hinduism is Monotheistic, which means it believes in only One God. It's mentioned in RigVeda 1.164.46,
"Ekaṃ sad viprā bahudhā vadanti." It means,
"Truth is one; God is one. Sages & saints call him by a variety of/various names."

This similar statement is repeated in RigVeda 10.114.5. A list of 13-consecutive verses are mentioned in AtharvaVeda 13.4.12-24 about Monotheism in Hinduism.

It's mentioned in
Chandogya Upanishad 6.2.1.
"Ekam Evadvitiyam."
"God is only One, without a Second."

So by these verses, Hinduism is strictly Monotheistic.

2. Is Idol-Worship allowed in Hinduism?

Hinduism condemns Idol Worship. It's mentioned in YajurVeda 32:3,
"Na tasya Pratima Asti."
"Of him, there is no pratima; there is no image, idol, statue, painting, portrait, etc."

YajurVeda 40:8 says, "Almighty God is imageless and pure."

And YajurVeda 40:9 states,
"Andhatam tamah pra visanti ye'sambhutim-upaasate. Tato bhuya iva te tamo ya'u sambhutyum ratah." Which means,
"They are entering darkness, those who worship the Asambhuti (Uncreated Things)" (Fire, Water, Air, Etc, Etc.) And the verse contines and says,
"Those who worship the Sambhuti (Created Things) Enter More in Darkness."
(Table, Chair, Idles, Temples, etc.)

So by these verses, HInduism is a Non-Idolatry religion.

3. Does God have a Family In Hinduism?

Hinduism Mentioned in Svetashvatara Upanishad 6:9,
"Na Casya Kascij, Janita Na Cadipah". This means,
"Of him, There are no lords, no parents, no mother, no father, etc."

God in Hinduism is one and alone. He has no Family, no Guru, No children, No Wife, etc. He is One, He is Brahman.

4. Is Associating Partners With God in Hinduism a Sin?

Yes, worshipping anyone besides God and not praying is a major sin. This is because in the Veda, it is mentioned in RigVeda 8.1.1,
"Ma Chidanyadvi Shansata,"
"Do not worship anybody but Him, the Divine One, Praise Him alone."

It's mentioned in the RigVeda 6.45.16,
"Ya Eka Ittamushtuhi,"
"Praise Him who is the matchless and alone."

The verse quoted earlier from YajurVeda 40:9 Clearly states,
"The Worshippers of the Non-Creation enter darkness. And The Worshippers of the Creation enter deeper into darkness"

So based on the verses provided above, The worship of anyone but God and the association of any partners besides the One true God, and even the absense of Prayer will lead you to Hell.

4. What is Hinduism?

The word Hindu comes from the River Sindhu, or the Indus River Valley. This word Hindu was first given by the Arabs when they came to India, and it was also used by the Persians, to describe the people that lived near the Indus River Valley Civilization. According to Swami Vivekananda (A great Hindu Scholar), the word Hindu is a misnomer. The Word Hinduism was first coined by the British Men, to describe the practices of the people that lived in India and the surrounding lands.

5. Does Hinduism mention Abrahamic Prophets?

Yes, Abrahamic Prophets were mentioned in Hindu Scriptures, mainly in Smriti-Texts such as The Bhavishya Purana.

Adam(Pbuh) is mentioned, and The Bhavishya Puraana says All Human-Beings are descendants of Adam (Aadama).

It's mentioned in
Bhavishya Purana Parv. 3(Pratisarg) Khand. 3 Adhyay. 2 about Prophet Jesus Christ(Pbuh). He is called as "Iśa Putra" which translates to "Son of God". It mentions that he is born to a virgin (Mother Mary). He is called a Mleccha (Foreigner).

Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh) is prophesized in
Bhavishya Purana Parv 3. (Pratisarg) Khand 3. Adhyay 3. Shlokas 5-8 & 10-27. He is called, "Mahamad" which is an alternative spelling of the name "Muhammad". He is called the Mleccha and from "Marusthal" (Desert Land). He is said to be sent by "Eeshwar Parmatma" (The Almighty God). He is sent to restore and to spread "Arya Dharma" (Dharmic Faith).

Though these verses may have been manipulated over-time, it is still a part of the Bhavishya Maha Purana. Many Hindu Scholars have mentioned this, Such as Ved Prakash Upadhyay, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, etc, have mentioned this more in detail. Mainly Ved Prakash who wrote a book called
"Avataar Kalki And Muhammad". Numerous References, Especially in the Veda have been given.

6. Does Hinduism Believe in Avataars?

No, Hinduism doesn't believe in the Manifestation of God as a Human, or the Avataar.
In fact, the word "Avataar" doesn't exist anywhere in the Vedas or the Upanishads. It is the Concept of the Smriti Texts, but not the Higher Shruti Texts such as the Ved and the Upanishad.

7. Are The Veda and The Upanishad The Word of God?

No, the Veda and the Upanishads are not Currently the Word of God. There are several errors and inappropriate things mentioned in these Hindu Scriptures, that we cannot believe to be written by God. However, We believe some parts of it. The Scriptures Do contain Science, Logic, Etc. But due to the Corruption of these Scriptures for the past 4,000 years, it is no longer its original form, and we don't know who wrote these Vedas. But still, Hinduism believes Veda is the word of God and is a part of the Shrti, the highest of all scriptures being the RigVeda.

8. When Learning Hinduism, Should We Follow The People or The Sacred Scriptures?

When learning Hinduism, it is better to learn it from the Sacred Scriptures rather than the people. This is because many times, the followers themselves don't know their own religion properly. The Vedas say God is only one, without an image, without parents, Etc. But the Hindu People say God is Multiple, he has vigrahas, he has parents and children. This goes against the Vedas and also spreads misconception about the Religion of Vedism. Though The Scriptures are corrupted, there are some parts that are still accurate as mentioned earlier. So it is better to learn any Religion through The Sacred Texts rather than the misguided followers.
